Temple of Aphaia, Aegina island, part of the sacred triangle of antiquity

The Temple of Aphaia stands on a hill about twenty minutes from Aegina port and was built around 500 BC on top of an older sanctuary. It is a Doric temple dedicated to the goddess Aphaia and together with the Parthenon and the Temple of Poseidon at Sounio forms the so called sacred triangle of antiquity. The visit is short but offers both wide views and historical context of the island.

Ο ναός της Αφαίας βρίσκεται σε ύψωμα περίπου είκοσι λεπτά από το λιμάνι της Αίγινας και χτίστηκε γύρω στο 500 π.Χ. πάνω σε παλαιότερο ιερό. Είναι δωρικός ναός αφιερωμένος στη θεότητα Αφαία και μαζί με τον Παρθενώνα και τον ναό του Ποσειδώνα στο Σούνιο σχηματίζει το λεγόμενο ιερό τρίγωνο της αρχαιότητας. Η επίσκεψη είναι σύντομη αλλά αξίζει για τη θέα και για να καταλάβει κανείς τη σημασία του νησιού στην αρχαία ιστορία.
